Jumbles Country Park comprises open parkland, a reservoir and picturesque walks. The Tea Garden Café provides welcome respite for walkers, offering food and light refreshments. For those of an artistic nature, visitors can also enjoy the many exhibitions and events held all year round.
The park opened in 1971 following the construction of Jumbles Reservoir. The walk around the water’s edge takes around an hour. It is generally flat and easy to walk around, ideal for people of all ages and the park is abound with wildlife, so there’s plenty for children to see along the way.
Bolton Steam Museum

Some 120 years ago, Lancashire produced more than half of the world’s supply of cotton textiles. The Bolton Steam Museum has showcased Bolton’s industrial heritage by displaying the largest collection of working mill engines in Europe.
With free entry (donations are encouraged to help keep the engines running during events), a visit to the Bolton Steam Museum makes for an inexpensive way to connect with Bolton’s history.
The museum hosts exciting events throughout the year such as ‘steam days’, with a wide collection of engines displayed and in full working use. Helpful volunteers are on hand to talk visitors through the machines and for children, there are quiz sheets for extra fun.
Smithfields Open Farm

Who doesn’t like cute animals? Set within 70 acres of rolling countryside just outside of Bolton is Smithills Open Farm. This family run business provides a great attraction to explore farmyard animals and exotic creatures for families with children.
The farm has plenty of animals to meet with new additions added on a regular basis. Animals to see include cows, pigs, goats, sheep and rabbits to llamas, owls, meerkats, donkeys, ducks, skunks and deers – plus many more!
There is also a dairy farm on site, offering visitors an educational insight into the processes behind milk farming. Every day at 1pm, there are talks held by local farmers on milking cows and even a live demonstration.
Visit the viewing gallery to maximise the learning opportunities provided by the farm, or take part in the calf feeding, which opens to the public every day at 2pm.
